The aim of this resource is to present a foundation for these techniques that will enable providers to have an effective consultation around weight loss with their patients.
Overview
Obesity is a complex, lifelong disease, influenced by genetic, physiological, environmental, psychological, social, economic, and political factors, which should be treated by health care professionals. Health professionals are uniquely qualified to initiate and guide patients through the process of weight loss, weight maintenance, and better health. By recognizing the complexities of excess weight and the implications of addressing the condition, providers are able patients improve their weight, and as a result, their health. To facilitate a good discussion with patients, it may be helpful to use techniques such as motivational interviewing and behavioral therapy. These education resources cover the basics of motivational interviewing, keys to successful conversations, behavioral therapy, and an overview of evidence-based treatments for obesity.
